Away Days: Old Trafford

Author: . Published: at 8:16pm

West Ham are certainly on a high at the moment, beating Tottenham 1-0 and then to go to Goodison Park just a few days later and beat Everton, was truly incredible.

We now go to Old Trafford, for the FA Cup Quarter Final against Manchester United.  If you are one of the 9000 fans travelling up, here is all the information you need to know.

General Information

Capacity: 75,635
Address: Sir Matt Busby Way, Manchester, M16 0RA

Away supporters are located in one corner of the ground, taking up part of the East and South stands.  As this is a cup game we will have a much larger allocation of 9000 across these two stands.  The views from the away sections are pretty good but be prepared for the walk up a few flights of stairs to the concourse.

Away supporters are set back from the pitch as there is a disabled area to its front.  The leg room between rows and space between the seats isn’t the best, but as fans stands up it is not really a problem.

From Upton Park it takes between 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Leave the M6 at Junction 19 and take the A556 in the direction of Manchester Airport/Altrincham.  Continue onto the M56 to Manchester, passing the Airport, and follow the signs to the M60 (Leeds/Liverpool). Leave the M60 at Junction 7 (A56 Chester Road) and continue through the lights until you reach the Stadium, although on match days this road may be closed to traffic.

There are several official car parks around the Stadium which are safe and secure and cost £10.  Spaces can be booked in advance at by clicking on the ‘BUY CAR PARKING’ icon on the West Ham United fixture.  (Access to car parks E1 & E2 can only be gained via Wharfside Way, Sir Matt Busby Way is a ‘no through’ road).

The most popular option is to park at Old Trafford Cricket Ground for £10 and it is then a 10-15 minute walk to Old Trafford.  Try to arrive before 1pm though, as if you arrive later it takes a long time to leave the car park.  The other option is to park at the Salford Quays Lowry Mall which is about a 10 minute walk and costs range between £3.50 (up to 2 hours) and £16 (24 hours), but you can also stay free for 4 hours if you spend at least £5 in the shopping mall.  This is a fairly good option as there is virtually no traffic upon leaving and the road takes you straight onto the M601 which joins up with the M62/M6.

The best way to get to Old Trafford is by Metrolink (especially on Sunday’s) or train from Manchester Piccadilly mainline station, as Old Trafford has its own railway station next to the ground and a Metrolink station next to Lancashire County Cricket Club. The Metrolink travels every 12 minutes every day of the week.

The nearest stations to the ground are Pomona or Exchange Quays on the Eccles line but they are not particularly convenient for getting to or from the away end.  When leaving, the best option is get the train from Manchester United Football Ground station to Piccadilly.  The entrance to the station is immediately outside the away end’

Avoid The Trafford, Sam Platts and Bishops Blaize as they only allow home fans to enter.  Most pubs near to the ground aren’t great for away fans so the city centre is a good option.

  • The Quadrant pub has a mixture of home and away fans and serves food and drink.

  • Lime Bar at Salford Quays also has a mixture of fans.

  • The Green Sports Bar is just one minute walk from Piccadilly Train Station.

  • the Bridge at Sale is two stops from Old Trafford on the Metro.

Refreshments are available from catering vans outside the Stadium as well as from the kiosks on the Stadium concourses.  The kiosks are cash only so make sure you have some cash on you.  There is a multi-buy deal, which is listed below:

3 for £7
Make a selection of one hot item (Meat & Potato Pie, Steak Pie, United Pie, Pasty, Sausage Roll or Hot Dog), one snack (Crisps, Mars Duo or Twix Extra) and one drink (Coca-Cola, Diet Coca-Cola, Fanta, Oasis, Water, Singha, John Smith’s, Bulmers or any hot drink).

6 for £12
Choose two of each of your favourite hot items, snacks and drinks.

If you’re not going to be at the match, make sure you add ‘thewesthamway’ on Snapchat and keep an eye on @WestHamWaycouk on Twitter for live updates throughout the game.

Wishing all the travelling fans a safe journey and let’s hope we are singing “We’re going to Wembley” on the journey home.  I hope to see some of you there and all being well, we can celebrate together.  COYI!
