Retro Hammers: Alessandro Diamanti

West Ham signed 25 year old Diamanti in the summer of 2009 for a fee
of 5.5 million from Italian outfit Livorno. Diamanti had scored 24
goals in 63 games for Livorno, which for an attacking midfielder is a
great record hence why the hammers jumped for his signature.
Diamanti made his debut on the 12th September in a not so exciting 1-0
defeat to Wigan Athletic. The Italian scored his first goal for the
club 7 days later in the form of a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool. His spot
kick created much speculation and controversy, the player slipped and
was thought to kick the ball from one foot to the other before the
ball sailed past Reina and hit the back of the net, the goal still
stood.
Gianfranco Zola and Diamanti formed a great relationship at West Ham,
which was noticed when Diamanti scored probably his best goal for the
club. Under the lights at Upton Park Diamanti stood over a free kick
against Birmingham city and placed it into the top right corner of the
goal. Ignoring all other players he ran straight to his manager for a
man hug, which showed that real Italian class.
Passion, determination, ambition and heart would some up the attacking
midfielders mentality during his time with the club where he scored 8
goals for West Ham, many believed he could be the next ‘Di Canio’ as
they shared the same flair. At the end of the season he was awarded
the hammer if the year runner up award, only for the no nonsense Scott
Parker to beat him to first prize.
Unfortunately the departure of Zola and the immediate arrival of Avram
Grant saw Diamanti’s future at Upton Park hit a stand still, he was
sent back out to Italian side Brescia much to the disappointment of
the hammers fans. During his time back in Italy he won his first
Italian national team call up in 2010. He was then signed by Bologna
where he played the most games in his career. He then saw himself move
to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande, since then he has a few loan
moves, quiet noticeably to Premier League Watford F.C.
Diamanti now plays back in the Italian league with Atalanta where he
has so far made 11 appearances with 1 goal.
Did you know?At his time at West Ham Diamanti shaved of his curly locks because
other players would tease him for using a hairdryer!
