West Ham United have completed the signing of Alvaro Arbeloa on a free transfer on a one-year deal.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid man joins the club after seeing his contract terminated at Los Blancos. He was so keen to join the club that he even paid for his own flights to secure the move to the London Stadium.

The World Cup and double European Championship winning full-back will add vital experience and bring a winning mentality to the side, and Slaven Bilic is said to see him as a perfect mentor to youngster Sam Byram.

The Spaniard will be no stranger to the Premier League having played for Liverpool for two years between 2007-2009 making 66 appearances for the Reds scoring two goals at Anfield. His successful spell in England secured him a move back to Real Madrid, where he started his career. He went on to make 153 appearances for the La Liga giants collecting a League winning medal once in 2012.

He will bring big game experience to the club having played in a number of El Clasico fixtures, coming up against class players like Neymar jr and Leo Messi in the process. Having won a number of titles both internationally and domestically he will bring a positive winning mentality to the club and will push Sam Byram to the next level and will also help develop the former Leeds man game further.

On his move, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid man said, “I am really happy to be here in a great Club in a great league,” Arbeloa told West Ham TV.

“I’m really happy to be back in England and, for me, it’s a great chance and I’m looking forward to playing with this side.

“The Stadium is amazing. It’s really nice and looks fantastic. Hopefully, I’m going to see the Stadium full with all our fans and I’m really happy to be here.

“For me, this is a great chance to be back in England and in the Premier League, which is a fantastic league and I want to put myself here again. This is a big Club and a great Club with fantastic players and a great coach.

“Slaven wants to see me training as soon as possible. I was talking with [Croatia internationals] Luka Modric and Matteo Kovacic and they told me good things about the coach, so I want to work with him and hopefully I can learn a lot of things.”

We welcome Alvaro to the club and wish him the best during his career in Claret and Blue.
