Boring goalless draw I said in the last preview and it seems that´s exactly what we got. Lots of Huff and Puff but lacking that bit of creativity needed to unlock good defences. The sooner Manuel Lanzini returns to the first team the better. But a point and a clean sheet in the long term can go a long way and if we can keep the clean sheets coming we will do well this year. Starting tomorrow night against Bolton.
Bolton brings back memories of a time when they were led by ex West Ham manager Sam Allardyce and regularly turned up and upset the big boys with a very direct style of football. Some people complained a lot about the way Big Sam set his teams to play but I´m sure if you ask most Bolton fans they would love to go back to the days of finishing high in the league and having 2 European adventures. Longer than our recent attempts. Unfortunately for them though those days are long gone now.
I would say a home game in the cup against a lower league team is the perfect chance to give some fringe 1st team players a run out. While i´m pleased to give younger players a chance, I hope we also make sure that we play a strong enough team to progress. Cup runs always give the club and supporters a great lift and I really hope we go all out to win this one.
West Ham United welcome back Mark Noble to the squad after a knee injury but Lanzini still misses out but talk is, he could be back at the weekend to face Tottenham. Edmilson Fernandes might be a bit longer. There was a bit of good news regarding James Collins as his injury is not as bad as first feared, but will still likely be missing for a month or so.
Bolton Wanderers are struggling at the bottom of the Championship at the moment with only 2 points from their 8 games so far and them points were a while ago. I expect them to change their team a bit as of course, Cullen and Burke are both unable to play against their parent club. Bolton have apparently told a number of their first teamers to stay in Bolton as the league is far more important to them.
Predicted Line ups :
West Ham United : Adrian, Byram, Ogbonna, Rice, Masuaku, Noble, Kouyate, Haksabanovic, Ayew, Arnautovic, Sakho.
Bolton Wanderers : Howard, Wheater, Dervite, Taylor, Little, Vela, Spearing, Pratley, Buckley, Madine, Armstrong.
I really don´t think Bolton will be up for this game unlike their teams of the past. They have a lot more to worry about staying in the Championship this year. But I do expect some of our players to try and force their way into Slaven Bilic’s mind with a good performance. Players should be going out to impress the manager and the fans. Because of this I will predict a comfortable win for the Hammers, I will bravely go for a 4-0 win and we keep the clean sheets coming.
