Who will get 7th place?

With only ten games remaining of the season, the race to 7th place is hotting up, with five teams still in contention. The teams consist of 7th place Wolves (40 points), 8th place Watford (40 points), 9th place Everton (36 points), 10th place West Ham (36 points) and 11th place Leicester (35 points). Although we’d love to finish 7th and potentially get European football, it’s going to be hard to better Wolves and Watford, who are having terrific seasons. However, it is definitely do-able when you look at the tough set of fixtures they have.
Wolves have massively over performed this season and it’s crazy to think that this time last year they were in the Championship! In midweek they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Huddersfield which could be a sign that their performances are starting to drop as the season comes to a close. They still have Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool to play, so with those tricky fixtures it makes you wonder if they’ll manage to maintain their position come the end of the season.
Watford are another team that have performed above expectations and find themselves joint on points with 7th, but down to 8th due to their lesser goal difference (likely not helped by their recent drubbing by Liverpool). They had an electric start to the season and found themselves in and around the top teams but soon they dropped back down around the mid table teams. Their new manager Javi Gracia has done a brilliant job with limited resources. Watford also have a tough run in with Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City still to play, so it’ll be close all the way to the end of the season.
Everton pip West Ham in 9th place right now due to their superior goal difference, but they have underperformed so far this season, especially compared to fan expectations. Having spent £200+ million in the last two seasons their fans and the board have been expecting to challenge the top six but so far have failed. Since they lost Lukaku, they haven’t been able to replace him and therefore probably won’t get 7th place. They still have to play all the top six apart from Man City so West Ham should have enough in them to pass Everton this season.
Next up in 10th place is West Ham and we’ve had an interesting season which has been rife with inconsistency. We’ve dominated teams like Manchester United while also losing to teams like Burnley. Overall the fanbase is moderately happy and a great end to the season would solidify it as a good season. We’ve had terrible injuries all season (the latest one is Cresswell being out) so we’ve been really unlucky. However, we are still in with a chance of 7th and we have easier runs than our competitors so we have a very good chance – as long as we beat the teams we should be beating.
Finally, we have Leicester who sit in 11th place after dropping down places in recent weeks. For most of the season they have been in and around 7th spot but after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Newport they haven’t been the same team. This drop in form has resulted in Puel being sacked and Brendan Rodgers being hired, would could be a great signing. Leicester have no top six games until the last 3 games of the season, where they face Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea – but that allows Rodgers and Leicester to get some form together and it’ll put them up the table. However, they may just fall short of reaching 7th.
To give a prediction of how the table will end up, you’d have to go with 7th place going to Watford, 8th place going to West Ham, 9th place going to Leicester, 10th place going to Wolves and 11th place going to Everton.
It’s going to be very tight, but only time will tell whats going to happen.
