If ever there was a game that could sum up being a West Ham fan, Saturday’s game against Huddersfield was probably it.

At home to a side who are as good as relegated, and yet we still manage to make a complete mess of it and somehow still get the points. Something doesn’t seem quite right at the club at the moment. The fact we won the game 4-3 says more about Huddersfield being in such a bad run of form – that nothing is going their way – rather then a miracle comeback from us.

We seem to be looking at the season as a whole, and the players really need to find out how to take each game as it comes. Walking out to Cardiff or Huddersfield is just as important as any of the top six – even more so, especially in our position – but there seems to be a lack of winning mentality amongst the group and it’s hard to pinpoint why.

The only thing that is obvious and has that stand out factor is the Marko Arnautovic situation. Could the fact that he was selected and started on Saturday be an issue for the rest of the team?

Say what you like about Hernandez – and he has definitely had his issues since joining the club – but when he came on the pitch on Saturday he was like a possessed man, chasing every lost cause and showing 100% commitment to get a goal. Point to prove much?

Pellegrini made a few changes to the squad after an appalling defeat against Cardiff and that wasn’t him waving a magic wand or working a stroke of genius – that was very much needed and a sensible decision. We still seemed to lack that killer instinct and the tempo of the game started like the team was going through the motions, as opposed to trying to win a game of football.

After the game on Saturday, West Ham fans had the strange feeling of mixed emotions, buzzing and “over chuffed” that we came back. Coming back from 3-1 down is impressive by anyone’s standard. However everyone was left with the same question as to why can’t we take games like this by the scruff of the neck.

Fortunately for us, we have an international break which couldn’t have come at a better time. Manuel Pellegrini can use this to give the players a rest but also work with them to get to the bottom of this mentality issue we so clearly have. If it is because of Arnautovic then his best bet would be to completely drop him from the squad – it’s not like he has been setting the world alight when he’s been playing – and if it means we get the same Hernandez we saw on Saturday then we will be better off. Alternatively Declan Rice playing well for England may just be what the squad needs to get their fire back.
